Green Close, a Lancaster-based participatory arts enterprise championing work in rural communities, commissioned ICDP to work with the public to create a light-based installation for the city’s annual light festival, Light Up Lancaster. The work was to be situated in an unused section of the central shopping centre, forming part of a trail of light installations throughout the city.
What We Achieved
Taking ICDP’s interest in creating unexpected links between distant communities, we decided to work on a large collaborative drawing on canvas with the Lancaster public, which would also feature projected Native American imagery, from our ongoing work with the Hopi Nation in Arizona. During 3 days of workshops, over 80 people worked to fill the canvas on which we left a specially contoured white space to take the projected image. The finished work was a magical illuminated fusion of imagery from two diverse cultures.
