A Million Minutes was a two-year programme of commissioned public artworks in Archway and Finsbury Park in North London. The project was initiated by Islington Council during times of austerity, and produced by AIR, a Central Saint Martins research studio which had been committed to local practice in the area for five years previously. A Million Minutes provided the opportunity for a heterogeneous group of practitioners to examine the public process, as well as to activate meaningful creative dialogue with a wide spectrum of local participants.
What We Achieved
We were commissioned by Islington Council to develop a month-long collaborative drawing laboratory in an empty shop-front on Archway's Junction Road. Working closely with AIR and with the help of over 30 student volunteers from Central Saint Martins and City & Islington College, we welcomed over 400 members of the public to help us create 3 mural-sized drawings on canvas. This was accomplished through open workshops and targeted sessions with local community groups. We were amazed to see how the Archway community bonded together to create such dazzling works.
